"Sandwich" Half Laps

1. Cut two boards to length -- leaving an overhang that matches the width of the boards you are using in the joint.

2. Spread a thin layer of glue between the boards, then secure with wood clamps or finish nails.

3. Create a another "sandwiched" board (repeat steps 1 & 2).

4. Let the sandwiched boards dry overnight.

5. Join the sandwiched boards. Some builders like to use wood screws or nails exclusively, while others avoid fasteners entirely, bringing half-lap joints together with nothing more than a few clamps and some glue.

Common wood screws seem to work really well with the sandwich half-lap joint I’ve been talking about here. Of course the size of screws you’ll want to buy depends on the type of lumber you are using (download free chart).

To make sure my wood screws are spaced evenly, I like to use a pilot hole guide to mark pilot hole locations.

How to Print and Assemble

All three of the Magic Drawing Cubes in this package include a large and jumbo version. These special PDF templates print in sections - on normal letter size paper - and are easily reassembled using a little tape on the backside of the paper.

Each section includes registration marks and guides to help you line up the edges of the overall template. See below for more information about printing and assembling the large and jumbo templates.

 
 

 

  
 
 

How to Print and Assemble Large and Jumbo Pages

Print PDFs
Print large and jumbo pages just as you would any other PDF document. You can use the PRINT button located at the top of each page.

Trim Pages
Find crop marks at upper and lower edges of paper - or just follow the edge of the image. Use a steel ruler and blade to remove excess margins.

Assemble Pages
Note the position icon on each page. The star tells you where the page should be located in relation to other pages in the document.

Tape Pages
Bring page sections together along trim lines and secure with tape - two short pieces on front, and one long strip across the back.
